Central Vacuum Q&A

WHAT IS A CENTRAL VACUUM SYSTEM?

A central vacuum system is the ultimate vacuum experience. The system consists of a series of 2" pipe run through the inner walls of your home. There are inlet valves at various locations that allow you to plug in your 30' hose and vacuum a large section of your home from each inlet. The vacuum unit is usually placed in a garage at the 'end' of the system. Units can be placed in basements, utility rooms even attics. The area needs to be easily accessible. You still need to be able to empty the unit. But because the unit can hold so much than any portable vacuum, you won't need to empty it nearly as often.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL ONE?

If you are building a home the system is started after the plumbing and HVAC is run. We do a 'walk through' with the customer to find out where large furniture and fixtures will be. Then mark where inlets would be best suited. The unit location is decided as well. Then the pipe is run from the unit location to the various inlet locations. The inlet valves kits are put into place and low voltage wire is run along the piping to the inlets. A drywall plate is placed in front of the inlet kit. These plates help the drywall person know to cut a hole for the valve in these places. After the home is finished we are called back in to 'trim out' the system. The unit is installed. Wires are connected and valve covers are put into place.

WHAT IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL IN AN EXISTING HOME?

This can usually be done. You need an accessible crawl space or basement and a suitable place for the unit. The home is analyzed to see if pipe can be run from a trunk line in the crawlspace or basement up through the walls to valve locations in the main living areas. If this can be done we proceed with installation. Holes must be cut to place inlet valves into the walls. Low voltage wire is fished along pipe to various inlets and then to the unit.

USING THE SYSTEM

When a customer decides that they want a central system they also choose what type of accessories are needed. There are power nozzle packages if you have carpeting or rugs. If you have mostly bare floors there is a turbo package or a bare floor package. When the system is finished we demonstrate the accessories and show you how to use your new central vacuum.
